One last deep breath before the starting gun goes off. The path quickly begins to narrow. I fly through the trees, following the tyre tracks left in the damp earth. A steep incline appears; I get off and shoulder the bike. The profile on my shoes keeps its grip on all surfaces and I remount before the others. I reach down and find the fastener immediately. I quickly adjust it so that the outer shell sits even more snugly against my foot. The great fit and ease of use keep me comfortable and stop the race from being pure torture.
